@lnxwalt1000 When I was doing it, those days weren't much fun.

Looking at the front page (1000 public timeline), I think #statusnet needs to pay some serious attention to anti-spam measures. #i_hate_spam #spam #spammers

I log back in here after months of absence. What do I see? Some of the same #spammers are still here, like @flubber134 and @beatsandstuff. If they were serious about communicating, they wouldn't pick an almost-unused site to fill with links. They'd be on #Twitter and #Plurk. #spam

@fawnsine @reathamobley @rositanuzzo If you're trying to get search rankings, this isn't the place. They're about to turn on NOFOLLOW. If you're trying to drive traffic directly, you need to go to Twitter or Plurk.com where there are more people to see your links. SPAMMING A LITTLE-USED MICROBLOG WON'T HELP YOUR SITE GET MORE TRAFFIC.

@worsttech Fair enough. Those two are heavy spammers.
Monday, 05-Apr-10 14:49:02 UTC from web -
@mowspace @worsttech These are low-traffic sites (and full NOFOLLOW is coming soon). You're better off joining Twitter or Plurk, where there are more users.

How to use microblogs as a part of your company's marketing strategy: (1) Understand who your audience and customers are. Make sure your announcements are *relevant to their needs*, not focused around yours. (2) Microblogs are a two-way conversation. If you aren't willing to listen and respond, then buy some banner ads instead of opening an account. !smallbiz

@lnxwalt1000 (3) Assign the same small number of people to handle all your microblogging. Make sure they understand that they are replacing some traditional sales / advertising / marketing and also some public relations efforts. This means they are now the public face of your company. So don't get in mudslinging matches with disgruntled customers or trash-talk competitors. Your !smallbiz can be badly hurt by misbehaving in public, so don't go there.
-
@lnxwalt1000 (4) Empower your #mblog team to give discounts, refunds, and other special offers to satisfy disgruntled customers. Your !smallbiz can also benefit by offering discounts and special offers to disgruntled customers of competitors. Again, the key here is to *listen to what people say* about your product, your brand, your company, and your industry.
-
@lnxwalt1000 (5) Your !smallbiz is one of millions trying to use tools like Twitter and Facebook to gain more customers. You have to make it worthwhile for people to subscribe to your updates. That means that you should have occasional specials that are only for your #mblog listeners and let them have the earliest possible access to new products / services. These are the people who are likely to become "evangelists" telling people how great your company and product is.

@worsttech Link-spamming may actually work a little on Twitter, because of the size of the user base and their sheeplike nature. This site, however, has very few real users, and they are pretty anti-spam.

@worsttech These sites only work if you use them for conversation with potential customers. If all you do is dump off links, no one will visit -- and the site will probably have rel="nofollow" soon, so links won't improve your search rankings.

@beatsandstuff I'm sure you don't want to waste your time, so you should be using Plurk.com or Twitter to tweet your links instead of StatusNet. Those sites have more users than StatusNet does.

@mowspace If you're just trying to get more traffic to your sites, your best bet is to use a high-traffic site like Plurk.com or Twitter. This place has very few users.

Tons of spam messages on the front page. I sure hope #StatusNet is using nofollow, so they don't raise their search ranking with this garbage.

@pleskk There are only a few people that use this site. This isn't the right place. Try Plurk.com and Twitter.com to get more visitors.

@lifecoachnetwork I'd never use a "life coach" that spams a microblogging site (or a chat room either). Seems pretty desperate to me.

I would never use a "life coach" that spams a microblogging site. If they're that desperate, maybe they aren't very good.

I am amazed at how often link-spammers flood into microblogging sites. They could be trying to generate "Google juice" for their sites, but most of their sites are hidden behind URL-shorteners. Yet, if they are trying to build traffic for their sites, they are going about it completely backwards. If a !smallbiz wants me to visit, they have to engage me in conversation--two-way conversation--about issues and situations that matter to _me_. A small "and if you want more info or you're interested in buying, visit our site" message _within_ _the _conversation_ is all I need to hear. I know you need customers. Just tell me what I want and need to know, and if / when I'm ready to buy, I'll look for you.
